CHAPTER ONE

1958

The tiny figure turned over to lie on her back against the cold, dirt floor. She slowly opened her eyes and couldn't help but squint from the bright sunbeam glaring through the small crack in the ceiling. It was the only light in the damp and dark cellar. At first she couldn't remember where she was, but the familiar, rancid smell of rotting potatoes made her realize she was in the old cellar once again.

After adjusting her eyes to the glare of the sunbeam, Sarah tried to stand up. She had been lying on the dirt floor with a couple of scratchy old potato sacks as her pillow. Her movement was slow and awkward as she pulled herself to her feet. The old familiar throbbing was there and she felt pain from her head to her toes. Hurting was part of her life, almost a daily routine now, except for Sundays when her parents took her to church. Sarah looked forward to Sundays.

She was on her feet now and moved cautiously to the door of the smelly old potato cellar. She took hold of the latch to open the door but hesitated when she heard her mother's voice in the distance. She didn't want her mother to see her until she was sure she had settled down from the earlier rage against her. When her mother's voice faded and Sarah knew she was gone, she tried to open the door but it wouldn't budge. Her mother had locked her inside. Again.
